Tyson Gentry was born and raised in Sandusky, Ohio where he excelled as a three-sport athlete at Perkins High School graduating in 2004. Tyson was recruited as a preferred walk-on for The Ohio State University’s football team, achieving the goal he set as a child. However, tragedy struck in 2006 during his sophomore year when a routine play on the field resulted in a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the neck down.

Determined to not let his disability stop him, Tyson underwent extensive surgeries and therapy, eventually regaining the use of his biceps. He graduated with a degree in speech and hearing science in 2009 and later earned his Masters Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Buffalo in 2014. Tyson married his college sweetheart, Megan in 2013 and now have two sons, Adam and Ryan.

In 2014, Tyson and Megan founded New Perspective Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to aiding individuals and families affected by spinal cord injuries. Through their foundation, they’ve provided over $700,000 in assistance to more than 300 families. Additionally, Tyson has authored a book for student-athletes that focuses on mental toughness, as well as a children’s book with a message of handling adversity and teamwork. Tyson enjoys sharing his inspiring story through motivational speaking engagements, emphasizing overcoming adversity, mental fortitude, and faith through trials with students, professionals, athletes and beyond.
